Kamen Kalev is a Bulgarian film director and screenwriter. He is born in Burgas in 1975. He graduated at the National Academy of Film Arts “La Femis” in Paris, France. Kalev came to prominence in 2009 with the film Eastern Plays. The film debuted the same year at “Directors Fothnight” in Cannes Film Festival and then earned the award for best film, best director and best actor, given to Hristo Hristov at Tokyo Film Festival.
Two years later Kamen Kalev released The Island with the French actress Laetitia Casta and Thure Lindhardt – Danish actor known from Angels and Demons. In 2014 Kalev was invited to take a part of the omnibus project Bridges of Sarajevo, directed by 14 European directors, including Jean Luc Godard, Sergei Loznitsa, Ursula Maier, Christi Puiu and others. The movie debuted at the Cannes Film Festival Official Selection.
