A few stories about sailors of the Black Sea, taking place in the span of one year.
Due to the European Union’s programme for reducing small finishing cutters, Alexander Trapchev agreed to have his ship Omega destroyed… What will Alexander and his crew go through during the destruction of Omega? How will they say goodbye to the small ship that protected them and put food on their tables for 10 years? Where will they go once the ship has been turned into scrap metal? The day after the destruction of Omega Alexander starts building a new ship. A year later it is ready.
The veteran sailor Dimitar Avrionov has spent 45 years of his life at sea. Until 2000 he travelled the world with the ships of the now gone Bulgarian National Fleet Ocean Fishing. Now he is the captain of a small fishing ship in the Black Sea. In 1987 he bought a VHS Camcorder and for 13 years recorded the life on the ships of Ocean Fishing around the whole world. After years in some drawer, today the old VHS cassettes come to life once again. Dimitar plays them and comments on the records of this other life. There are a lot of smiles in his tales but also a lot of grief.
Hristo Spasov’s fishing vessel is taken in 2012, 20 miles from the Romanian coast, on charges of poaching. Hristo spends two months in a Romanian prison, his ship is detained. The lawsuits go on for years. Despite receiving 5 verdicts of not guilty, he is still sentenced but appeals again. Hristo is out on the sea every day with his crew and his two children. Full of energy and with a contagious sense of humour, he fights his battles relentlessly, both at sea and on land.
Zoia and Plamen Kostovi (the Teachers family) are both teachers. To survive on their meager teacher salaries and raise their children, they have been going out to sea in their fishing boat to catch veined rapa whelks for years. They do it on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as during vacations. The wife is the captain of the boat, Plamen is the diver, who looks for whelks. Combining the work at sea with joking and teasing each other, they usually manage to gather around 100 kilos of whelks. Zoia and Plamen’s most treasured possession is an oil painting of their boat with them on board in the middle of a storm – it was painted by a friend, a painter who lived through the experience with them. They can spend hours showing it and talking about it.
A number of different outlooks on the life along the coast and in the waters of the Black Sea.
